Job Description

Carnegie Mellon University's Manufacturing Futures Institute (MFI) is a campus-wide institute whose mission is to bring together all facets of Carnegie Mellon excellence to inspire and engineer the world's premier technological advances in agile, intelligent, efficient and resilient manufacturing. We own a culture of collaboration and activate across disciplines to create and conduct groundbreaking research that exploits the rapid pace of innovation for advancing manufacturing, to educate, empower and inspire manufacturing innovators and leaders through experiential learning, and to inspire fundamental discoveries and accelerate their translation toward commercialization.

MFI will be a partner in the "Advanced Manufacturing Technology Learning Laboratory & Experience Center" (Learning Lab) initiative at Mill 19 at Hazelwood Green where the Advanced Robotics for Manufacturing (ARM) Institute, MFI, and Catalyst Connection are tenants and are co-located. It will leverage the assets and capabilities of ARM and MFI, including equipment, software, and technical experts in the advanced manufacturing technologies critical to the manufacturing supply chain, as well as the training experience and relationships with regional manufacturers and training centers of Catalyst Connection. CMU, ARM and Catalyst Connection expect three primary constituent groups to engage in Learning Lab activities including:

  • Adult job seekers looking to enhance their skills and secure new employment, and incumbent workers and apprentices who want to gain new skills to support business investments through relationships with vocational training centers, community colleges and training programs at regional businesses;

  • High school students participating in STEM career and technical education programs at their schools, and/or in pre-apprenticeship programs; and

  • CEOs and decision makers from small and medium manufacturers seeking to further understand and assess the impact of advanced technologies on their businesses.

We are searching for a highly motivated professional to join our team as Learning Lab & Experience Center Manager. This role serves as the lead for the design, development, and execution of MFI's responsibilities related to the Learning Lab & Experience Center and reports to the MFI Executive Director.

Responsibilities:

  • Program management responsibility for MFI's design, development, and execution of the Learning Lab & Experience Center activities.

  • Working closely and collaboratively with functional and implementation teams to evaluate the educational opportunities that can be contributed by or connected to MFI and specifically the Mill 19 ecosystem. Serving as the liaison to ARM and Catalyst Connection in co-development and coordination of activities.

  • Leading the development of curricular content connected to the Learning Lab & Experience Center, K-12 outreach and other MFI experiential learning programs. This effort includes engaging CMU technical experts on development of advanced manufacturing topics, particularly in digital transformation, additive manufacturing, and robotics. Coordinating and curating raw content to develop and tailor into curricular modules at levels appropriate for specific Learning Lab & Experiential Center audiences (e.g. K-12 students, students in vocational training programs, decision makers from regional manufacturers).

  • Connecting with external entities, such as industry and other regional and national organizations, to promote engagement with Learning Lab & Experience Center opportunities.

  • Engaging with visitors through events, tours, and other Learning Lab & Experience Center activities at Mill 19.

  • Other duties as assigned.

You should demonstrate:

  • Strong interpersonal, verbal, and written communication skills.

  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team to develop strong internal and external relationships, understanding both organizational and business needs to leverage for the fullest benefit of our institute and our broader community.

  • Strong organization and planning skills, careful attention to detail with strong follow-through, able to prioritize and organize tasks effectively to accomplish objectives in a timely matter.

  • Aptitude for technology and proficiency using IT systems and tools (e.g., Microsoft Office, with advanced skills in PowerPoint/presentations).

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree required, master's degree preferred.

  • Five to seven years of relevant experience required.

  • Experience in STEM workforce development and/or education and outreach preferred.

  • Experience in working with technical experts to create educational content for various audiences.

  • Experience in project and program management.

  • Resourceful self-starter who takes initiative to quickly assimilate and apply new knowledge.

  • Meticulous, organized, self-motivated, practical, and flexible. Able to effectively handle multiple and shifting priorities in a fast-paced environment.

Requirements:

  • Background check
